Westland submission

Hi,

I am contacting you in regards to the submission for Westland/Tai Poutini NPMP. It's a rather heavy document and I am already engaged in quite a lot of activities promoting conservation so I'm running out of time. So I would like to share with you my thoughts in this informal matter, and would like to ask you to consider this as my formal submission. Please forward it to the team in charge of collating them.

My main comment is in regards to the proposed gondola. Everyone would agree the conservation estate would be better off without this visual eyesore. However, another nuisance to natural environment is noise, and the air traffic in the area is simply out of control. Between two evils, I would prefer the most environmental friendly one, and for me, it is the gondola. However, I would not grant any consent for such construction without a significant, measurable reduction in air traffic, both helicopters and planes.

As the body in charge of managing the parks, DOC grants concessions for commercial operators to land on conservation land, and therefore has the power to reduce the number of the concessions at will. I would be strongly disappointed if you allowed the construction of the gondola without imposing counterparts from the tourism industry.

I am eagerly looking forward to hear back from the outcome of this submission and the others. Please include me in general updates on this process.

Thanks,

Benoit Pette
