Jeff nous a annonce son depart a la retraite. Je lui ai d'abord laisse ce message sur Teams: "Hey Jeff, The message you left last night on the chat has just been brought to my attention. While I 100% respect your decision, it comes as a shock, Jeff. I can't express how much I have enjoyed working with you, and I'm deeply saddened you will be leaving us soon. Your optimism, your high work ethic, wisdom, knowledge of the business, of the project and of the team ... you are leaving gigantic shoes to fill, Jeff! I wish I could convince you to change your mind so that you'd stay a little longer, but that wouldn't be as graceful as you've been with me throughout this year, when I had to fade away a little. I also acknowledge it must not have been an easy decision to take. From the bottom of my heart, I am wishing you all the best, Jeff, and will definitively share a drink, in good spirit, before you leave. Nga mea pai katoa" ... puis j'ai prepare ce discours pour son pot de depart.
Kia ora koutou,
Today, we gather to bid farewell to 2024 and to a remarkable colleague, a mentor, and, above all, a truly exceptional human being: Jeff.
I’ve only had the pleasure of knowing Jeff for a year and a half, but from day one, he left an impression on me that’s hard to articulate. From the job interview, at Mojo in Bowen, Jeff struck me immediately as a man of rare balance—centered, calm, and firmly grounded in the deep knowledge of his craft. He possesses a wisdom that doesn’t need to shout to be heard, a quiet strength that has guided our team with unwavering purpose.
Together, we were tasked with delivering an enterprise-grade AMIS in less time it takes for Jeff to pick up his guitar! It was no small feat. Yet, in his own unique style, Jeff steered our ship through some truly turbulent waters. And he did so in the way only he could—gentle, knowledgeable and impossibly optimistic. It’s been an absolute privilege to be part of his crew.
But beyond his professional excellence, what has truly left me in awe time and time again is just how humane Jeff is. This year, as some of you know, has been a challenging one for me, but I only bring this up for one reason: throughout my struggles, Jeff has shown a grace, understanding, and respect that I’ve rarely, if ever, seen in a professional environment. His ability to see people—not just their roles—has made all the difference for me, and I know I’m not alone in saying that. Does he even know how far he’s known in my social network for his support this year?
Amongst other traits, there is Jeff’s sense of humour. I find it truly special, cheek-in-tongue, although it’s often unclear whether people are smiling at a joke he’s making or at yet another anecdote he weaves into his arguments.
Music anecdotes have been aplenty, as we know Jeff’s love for his guitar runs deep. In fact, his passion for strumming strings rivals my passion for cheese—though, thankfully, I’ve resisted the urge to wear shirts with giant wedges of brie on them! Jeff, on the other hand, wears his musical enthusiasm proudly, and it’s been a delight to see that energy spill into so many of our conversations.
Jeff, you are one of a kind, and you will be deeply missed. I will miss your wisdom, your kindness, and your unshakable optimism. I’ll miss the calm you bring to any storm and the warmth you bring to any room. It’s been an absolute honor to know you and work alongside you.
As you step into this next chapter, I wish you endless joy—whether you’re playing guitar, tapping away at the keyboard, or spending precious time with your children and grandchildren. Enjoy your well-deserved retirement Jeff —though I suspect the guitar strings will get a fair workout!
Thank you.
